Should we be controlled by our spiritual leaders?

The answer is “NO”. It’s amazing how many leaders now are using the scriptures to justify unreasonable control of their members. Believers are being taught we have to submit to our leaders because God has given them rule over our soul. Most of our leaders, particularly in the Non-Denomination and Pentecostal Churches not only teach this in error, but also, take it to the extreme; demanding that your personal finances be allocated only with their permission and in accordance with their demands.

This type of teaching and leadership does not coincide with the teachings and leadership of Jesus Christ. Christ never intended for your leaders to rule over you, but rather, to serve you.

But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came NOT to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. Matthew 20:25–28.

When Jesus made reference to the “Princes of the Gentiles” in Matthew 20:25, he did so because during that time the Roman army/government occupied Israel and had a command structure in place that had many levels of authority; they were in complete control of the people.

The Greek word “Minister ‘ is διακονῆσαι (transliterated diakonesai) it means to render assistance or help by performing certain duties, often of a humble or menial nature. The Greek word is not at all indicative of some of today’s leaders. Instead of being servants and rendering aid to the men and women of God they are demanding servantry from their congregants and holding them hostage because of greed, fame and ignorance. This topic as well as several others are taught in error and because the mass majority of believers don’t study for themselves, they fall victim to this erroneous teaching.

Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint (restriction, control), but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; NEITHER as being lords over God’s heritage, but BEING ENSAMPLES to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd (JESUS) shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. 1 Peter 5:2–4.

Your leader does not have God given authority to lord over your life as if you have no SAVIOR. Their job is to disciple, and render aid where necessary. Teaching you how to live in accordance with the Word of God by being an example.

But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. 1 Corinthians 11:3.

LET’S LOOK AT THE SCRIPTURES USED TO JUSTIFY SUBMISSION TO LEADERS

Remember them (some versions say leaders) which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the Word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. Hebrews 13:7.

This scripture is clearly making reference to your spiritual leaders because it says “Who have spoken unto you the Word of God”. But it also says “Who’s faith follow, considering the end of their conversation”.

Rule– Greek word is ἡγουμένων ( Transliterated hegoumemon ) it means to so influence others as to cause them to follow a recommended course of action.

The writer is clearly saying to remember the leaders that have influenced you and who’s recommendations you followed because of the example they have set before you.

The Epistle to the Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and were being tempted to return to Judaism. The writer warns them against regarding Christianity as a spinoff from Judaism and encourages them to persevere in their faith. The persecution mentioned in chapter 10 was more than likely caused by Nero. Nero would persecute the Christians in many ways one of which he would drive a stake through the middle of their bodies and use them as torches to light his garden.

The author was making a plea to Christians to be faithful in the mist of persecution, knowing that Jesus Christ can sustain them. Your Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist Pastor or Teacher should be one of the most influential people in your life. So much so that you will want to follow them because they are practicing what they preach and leading by example.

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you. Hebrews 13:17.

Obey– Greek word is πείθεσθε ( Transliterated peithesthe ) it means to submit to authority or reason by obeying—‘to obey.’

Rule– Greek word is ἡγουμένοις ( Transliterated hegoumenois ) it means to rule over, with the implication of providing direction and leadership—‘to rule over, to order, to govern, government, rule.’

Submit- Greek word is  ὑπείκετε ( Transliterated hypeikete ) to submit to the orders or directives of someone—‘to obey, to submit to, obedience, submission.

Soul- Greek word is ψυχῶν ( Transliterated psychon ) the essence of life in terms of thinking, willing, and feeling—‘inner self, mind, thoughts, feelings, heart, being. One who rules, with the implication of preeminent position—‘ruler.

This scripture is saying obey the people that are in leadership, like president , government and submit to their rule. They watch for your soul ( that part of you that connects to man) and they will give an account for how they handled their reign and you.

Hebrews 13:7  Is clearly speaking of SPIRITUAL LEADERS “who have spoken to you the word of God ”. and in Hebrews 13:17 Paul is clearly speaking of GOVERNMENTAL LEADERS .

YOUR SPIRITUAL LEADER SHOULD NOT CONTROL OR RULE OVER YOU, BUT RATHER SERVE YOU
